At Hartland North, we cleaned the school's main sign and added more plants around the sign to liven up the area. The flowerbed located south of the main entrance was extended by 10 feet in order to make space for more plants and artwork. Near the 5K door, we also added plants and trellises to support them, as well as an additional flowerbed between the trees on the lawn. Finally, we fully refreshed and weeded the school's butterfly garden along with a general weeding and clean-up of the whole school area.
At Hartland South, we refreshed the eastern side of the front lawn, replacing the arborvitae with smaller shrubs and keeping the stumps as seating. We also expanded the flowerbeds and added additional picnic tables. Next to the main entrance, we added trellises and planted vegetables, which were then harvested with students. Various plants were also added and weeds removed across the area.
At North Shore Middle School, we revitalized the entrance island, adding a number of plants and decorations. The main entrance area was also revamped by adding more plants around the school sign and flowerbeds by the sidewalk, as well as footpaths for high-traffic areas. We also improved the recess areas, creating wildflower prairies with walking paths and benches. More plants were added in various locations around the school as well.
We have considered the idea of adding a large mural to the side of the shed at Hartland South, similar to the image shown. Some ideas for the mural are a representation of the natural history of the area(such as glaciers, an inland sea, and modern woodlands), and a honeycomb pattern where each class of students has the opportunity to paint a few hexagons in a color they choose.
